Draft Sustainable Energy Development Strategy of the Republic of Bulgaria 2030/2050

The Ministry of Energy has published a draft Strategy for Sustainable Energy Development of the Republic of Bulgaria until 2030, with a horizon until 2050. The strategy reflects the state’s ideas and policies for the development of the energy sector, taking into account the current European energy policy framework and global trends in the development of new energy technologies.

As a member state of the European Union, Bulgaria shares the common value of developing a just and prosperous society with a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy, where there are no net greenhouse gas emissions in 2050 and economic growth is decoupled from the use of fossil fuels and resources.

The strategy aims to protect, preserve and enhance Bulgaria's natural capital, to protect the health and well-being of citizens from environmental risks and impacts, and to develop a low-emission and innovative energy sector.

The transition to low-carbon energy presented in the Strategy puts people first and focuses on the regions facing the greatest challenges.

The strategy sets the following strategic objectives for the development of the Bulgarian energy sector:

  • Security of energy supply and grid infrastructure;
  • Sustainable use of local energy resources;
  • Decarbonisation, democratisation and decentralisation;
  • Energy efficiency;
  • Integrated and liberalised energy market;
  • New technologies, innovation, research and education
